Retired Kentuckian autoworker Kirk Gillenwaters of Louisville is counting on Social Security being there for him when he retires. He’s been working since age eighteen and will soon need the benefits he’s earned.
Kirk’s senator, Republican Senator Mitch McConnell (who calls himself the “proud guardian of gridlock”) wants to cut Social Security.

In an interview recently granted to the National Review, McConnell expressed support for schemes that would cut benefits for future retirees. ai???I think a place to talk is on things like chained CPI,ai??? he told the Review, ai???and raising the age for Medicare… To me, thatai??i??s a better place to go in the fall than signaling that youai??i??re open to raising taxes.ai???
McConnell may not care about honoring the country’s promise of a secure and dignified retirement to younger workers, but his constituents do. By a three-to-one margin, Kentuckians surveyed by Public Policy Polling say that knowing Mitch McConnell supports cuts to Social Security or Medicare would make them less likely to vote for him:
